Is Manual Osteopathy Covered by Health Insurance? Many private health insurance plans such as Chamber of Commerce, Desjardins, Empire Life, Equitable Life, Great West Life, Green Shield, Johnson Group, Manulife, Maximum Benefits, Sunlife, Quick Card, etc., do cover osteopathic manual treatment. Please consult your extended health provider prior to your first visit to enquire about osteopathy coverage.

Do I need a referral from my GP?Although referral by a GP is not necessary before visiting a manual osteopath, we do encourage keeping your GP fully informed to ensure your receive the best possible care from both health professionals. With your permission, we usually send a brief report to your GP with details of your condition and treatment. We find more and more GP’s are referring patients to manual osteopaths, as some complaints may respond better to osteopathy than to conventional treatments.

What to expect on your first osteopathic visit?First appointments are up to 60 minutes, follow-up sessions about 50 minutes. You are welcome to have a friend or relative present during your osteopathy sessions. During you or your childs first appointment your manual osteopath will take a case history which includes questions about your symptoms, medical history and general health. This information is important as it helps to create a treatment plan customized to your specific needs. A careful physical examination will be performed to observe you or your childs posture and how your body moves. If you need to undress, your manual osteopath will then leave the room. Some clients prefer to disrobe, while others prefer to leave on their clothes, change clothes (shorts, t-shirt, sport-bra) or partially disrobe. Your manual osteopath will knock on the door to be sure you are ready before re-entering. We will discuss our findings with you and whether to proceed with treatment. You will usually be treated lying on a massage table, using one or several of a variety of osteopathy techniques. Once your treatment is complete, your manual osteopath will leave the room for you to redress. When you are ready, open the door slightly to signal that you are dressed so your manual osteopath can re-enter the room to discuss the treatment and share important tips for home care, such as giving you therapeutic joint specific exercises if needed. Your payment will be taken after the treatment is completed. A paid in full receipt will be issued. And you will be assisted in booking your next appointment.
